Typical price of a 3/4" sheet
| Type | Sheet | Per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| RTD sheathing (CDX type), 23/32" | $43.26 | $1.35 |
| BC sanded pine, 23/32" | $51.31 | $1.60 |
| MDF | $49.98 | $1.56 |
| White melamine | $47.20 | $1.48 |
| PureBond birch | $75.73 | $2.37 |
| PureBond red oak | $80.78 | $2.52 |
| Okoume marine (18 mm) | $210.00 | $6.56 |
Thinner sheets cost less, but not in proportion: 1/2" birch was $60.58 and 1/4" birch $40.38. All 28 prices, with 1/4" and 1/2" sheets and links to each listing, are in the full price table below.
Cutting fewer sheets saves more than a cheaper grade
The price per sheet matters less than the number of sheets you buy. Here is a pair of 72" bookcases in 3/4" birch, with a 1/8" saw kerf. Grain runs the long way on the sides and face trim.
| Part | Length × width | Qty | Grain locked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side | 72 × 11 1/4 | 4 | yes |
| Top/bottom | 34 1/2 × 11 1/4 | 4 | no |
| Shelf | 34 3/8 × 10 3/4 | 8 | no |
| Face trim | 72 × 1 1/2 | 4 | yes |
Laid out on paper by ripping full-length strips at each part's width and crosscutting them, one part size per strip, the job needs 3 sheets. CutlistPal's solver fits it on 2 and proves 2 is the minimum, with 11.2% waste. On each sheet the two sides and two face-trim strips run 72" along the grain, two top/bottoms come out of the last 24" turned across the sheet, and four shelves fill the rest.
At $75.73 a sheet that is $151.46 instead of $227.19, a saving of $75.73 before tax. Switching the whole job from birch to BC pine saves $48.84 on two sheets. The layout saves more, and the bookcase still looks like birch.
Grain direction counts too. Tick grain on every part and the same bookcase needs 3 sheets again, because the shelves and top/bottoms can no longer turn into the spare space. Lock only the parts where you will see it.
The plywood cut list calculator opens with this bookcase loaded. Change the sheet price to what your store charges and press Calculate.
How many sheets do I need
Total part area divided by 32 square feet gives you a floor, not an answer. For the bookcase above the area works out to 1.78 sheets. Long parts, kerf and grain push real jobs past that number, and how far depends on the sizes.
To get the real count, enter your parts at finished size in the cut list optimizer. If you buy several sizes, such as full and half sheets of MDF, the sheet cutting optimizer takes a price for each and finds the cheapest mix. Working in millimetres with 2440 × 1220 boards, use the metric cut list calculator. Every result shows the sheet count and, if you entered prices, the total cost.

Per square foot is the sheet price divided by the nominal face area: 32 for 4×8, 25 for 5×5. Nominal 3/4" sheets are thinner than 3/4": the PureBond birch measures 0.703".

What makes one sheet cost more than another
Face grade
Same store, same 23/32" thickness: RTD sheathing was $43.26, BC sanded pine $51.31, Sandeply hardwood plywood $70.55 and PureBond birch $75.73. The extra money buys a sanded face with fewer patches, which only matters on parts you will see.
Species
Birch and maple PureBond were the same price, $75.73. Red oak was $5.05 more at $80.78.
Thickness
Price does not drop in step with thickness. PureBond birch was $40.38 at 1/4", $60.58 at 1/2" and $75.73 at 3/4". The 1/2" sheet has two thirds of the wood for 80% of the price. MDF is the same: 1/2" was $45.00 and 3/4" was $49.98.
Core and glue
PureBond birch is 7 plies around a poplar core. Baltic birch is 13 plies of birch in 3/4". At $62.95 for a 5×5 it works out to $2.52 a square foot, only 15 cents more than PureBond birch. Marine plywood adds waterproof (WBP) glue and equal-thickness hardwood plies: 3/4" okoume was $210, almost three times the birch.
Where you buy and how many
Home Depot listed bulk prices on construction panels: 15/32" sheathing dropped from $27.81 to $25.03 at 72 sheets, and 7/16" OSB from $13.63 to $12.95 at 68. Marine plywood mostly comes from specialty dealers, and freight can cost almost as much as the sheet. Chesapeake Light Craft quotes shipping on full 4×8 sheets from $175.
OSB and sheathing are priced off the framing-lumber market and change more often than hardwood plywood. Check the date on any price list, this one included.
When a cheaper sheet is the right sheet
- Painted doors and panels: 3/4" MDF at $49.98 is $25.75 less than 3/4" birch and paints flatter. It is heavy, holds screws poorly in its edges and swells if it gets wet.
- Cabinet boxes: white melamine at $47.20 comes finished. You still need edge banding and a sharp blade to avoid chipping. One melamine panel Home Depot sells is 49 × 97", so measure before you enter it.
- Shop cabinets and jigs: 23/32" BC sanded pine at $51.31, or the $46.48 cabinet-grade panel. That one is 0.688" thick, so size your dadoes to the sheet.
- Cabinet backs: 1/8" tempered hardboard is $14.25 a sheet. 1/4" BC pine is $31.82 and 1/4" birch $40.38 if the back shows.
- Sheathing and subfloor: OSB costs about half as much as plywood: $13.63 against $27.81 for wall sheathing, $23.43 against $50.47 for tongue-and-groove subfloor.
Do not save on anything that gets wet. MDF and melamine swell in a bathroom or outdoors. Outdoors, use pressure-treated ($59.38 for 23/32" CCX) or marine plywood.
Questions people ask
How much is a 4×8 sheet of plywood?
On November 4, 2026 Home Depot listed a 4×8 sheet at $27.81 for 15/32" RTD sheathing, $51.31 for 23/32" BC sanded pine, $75.73 for 3/4" PureBond birch and $80.78 for 3/4" PureBond red oak. Those are online prices with no store selected, so your store can be higher or lower.
What does 3/4" plywood cost per square foot?
From the prices on this page: $1.35 for 23/32" sheathing, $1.60 for BC sanded pine, $2.37 for PureBond birch, $2.52 for Baltic birch and $6.56 for okoume marine plywood. Divide the sheet price by 32 for a 4×8 sheet or by 25 for a 5×5.
Is OSB cheaper than plywood?
Yes, by about half. 7/16" OSB sheathing was $13.63 a sheet and 15/32" plywood sheathing $27.81. For subfloor, 23/32" tongue-and-groove OSB was $23.43 and the same thickness in tongue-and-groove plywood $50.47.
Is MDF cheaper than plywood?
Cheaper than hardwood plywood, not much cheaper than pine. A 3/4" 4×8 MDF panel was $49.98, against $51.31 for 23/32" BC sanded pine and $75.73 for 3/4" birch. MDF is the better buy for painted doors and panels, as long as it stays dry.
Why is marine plywood so expensive?
BS 1088 marine plywood uses waterproof (WBP) glue and hardwood in every ply, in equal-thickness layers. Boulter Plywood lists 18 mm okoume at $210 a sheet, and most people have to add freight: Chesapeake Light Craft quotes full-sheet shipping from $175.
How many sheets of plywood do I need?
Enter your parts in a cut list optimizer and read the sheet count from the layout. Dividing total part area by 32 square feet gives a number that is often too low. For the bookcase on this page area says 1.78 sheets, a simple strip layout needs 3 and the best layout needs 2.
